Event – The key of social discovery service

The idea of location-based social service is not new. Since Foursquare, every year in SXSW, a lot of location-based apps try to get the buzz. This year almost all these apps try to play with the concept of social discovery service. The discovery service is about find people who are close and you probably would like to meet, based on the exist data on your social network.

Last year, Sonar and Banjo try to solve this problem by using check-in mechanism. After Realizing that check-in is not the right choice to get location for realtime discovery service. This year almost every app is designed to run in the background.Yes, they solved the real-time issue. But I don’t know whether it’s the right solution or not. Because Loopt have already proved that the users will kill the app since it will drain your battery.

So what’s the key of social discovery service? The first batch of the apps put location first, people second. This year, people is the lead and location is the support role.In my opinion, I think they miss a key factor of social interaction which is social scenario.Try to imagine following scenario, and think about which is more natural for people to get connected.
1.You’re waiting for your coffee in the Starbucks. A stranger walk over and say his a friend of your friend. Would you like to chat with him?
2.You’re walking down the street. A stranger come over and say his a friend of your friend. Would you like to chat with him?
3. You’re in a party. A stranger walk over and say his a friend of your friend. Would you like to chat with him?
You can meet with new people by using all these 3 ways. But apparently in the last scenario, there is a great chance that you will talk to the stranger. Because you’re in a social event, you already have the preparation to meet new people.

Nowadays a huge amount of venture capital’s money goes to these location-based service, cause they believe that location is the key that driving people get connected. After the above analysis, I believe that location is not the silver bullet, what happened on the location and who are at the location are more important than the location.

In my opinion, social event can be the key of social discovery service. The event can create a social scenario that help people get connected. The RSVP information can replace the check-in to help analyse user’s behavior. Don’t need to run in the background, provide all the information of people who attend the event, let the user decide who they want to talk to. Partner with ticket vendors, promote their public event and get commission fee from them which is a solid business model for me.

I built Advent for 08766′s poster show. Advent use event as a bridge to provide you real social experience.Bring social interaction from online to offline. We leverag Facebook open graph, help users to discover events and people who match their interests. More importantly, we provide the background information to help users get connected with others in real life. I believe that Advent can be one good solution in social discovery area. I really hope Advent can bring people out of their room to meet new people, instead of nesting in home and meeting people use virtual social network.

Start with a LinkedIn mobile app survey

Last year when LinkedIn launched their new redesigned mobile application, I conducted this survey. The objective of this survey is discovering LinkedIn mobile app’s recognition in the LinkedIn users and identifying the interest of users.

I spent 3 hours on the first day of CMU TOC( September 11, 2011), 31 people took the survey, 17 recruiters and 14 students. 2 out of 14 students, one undergraduate and one graduate student don’t use LinkedIn. 16 recruiters are on LinkedIn more than 2 years; their average number of connections is 200. 9 out of 16 recruiters never used LinkedIn mobile app. 6 recruiters use LinkedIn iOS app and one recruiter use both iOS and Android apps. Plus, just one student use android app. So, 31 people took the survey only 8 people have experience with LinkedIn Mobile App. Here are some answers statistics about the LinkedIn mobile app from these 8 people.

  • What do you LEAST like about LinkedIn’s app?
  • What feature you use the MOST on LinkedIn mobile application?
  • When do you usually use LinkedIn’s app?

Although LinkedIn redesigned its mobile apps, still a lot of LinkedIn users never used its apps. Why? All mobile apps’ functions, users can find on the website. Plus, almost all the user use LinkedIn before or after the social event, real-time interaction is not that critical for LinkedIn. So what’s the purpose of this LinkedIn mobile app? Is it just an extension of the website?

Why not add some location based features on the mobile app? Why not help users connect with other people during the social event. Help users find out who is in this room right now. Pull out some information from user’s Twitter, Facebook and other social network. Help users find out is there any mutual friends or connections between user and the person he wants to talk to. 28 out of 31 people who took the survey are interested in this function. I think social discovery will be huge in the next 3 years, location based service maybe is the solution.

I wrote these suggestions  right after the TOC and sent the survey report to one of the engineer in the LinkedIn mobile team. He was interested and shared the report in the mobile team. After six months, I don’t see any changes in their mobile app. However, a lot of social discovery services launched in this year SXSW. Mingle and INTRO took the business angle, help users discover connections while they are in the social event. I don’t know why LinkedIn don’t what to develop their own social discovery app, maybe they’re busy with some other things. Compare to use the time and resources to design and develop on their own, they have already got used to acquire new start-ups. I don’t know whether acquisition is a better choice or not.  I’m just wondering have LinkedIn lost their ability to be creative or the balls to take the risk?

New Start, Find My Way

Last Sunday was my 23 years old birthday. I almost knew where I will be in 3 years. And I have a plan for me about the future after that. I thought I should record my life and thought. When I look back in the future, it may get interesting. I always consider me as a visionary person, but I hardly share my ideas to others. So it’s hard to prove the point. I will start share my idea here, mark the shift of the industry. Prove myself and practice my English writing skill. :)
